The exhibition at Palazzo Reale in Milan brings together the most extraordinary images taken by Margaret Bourke-White, one of the most representative and emblematic figures of photojournalism. During the course of the exhibition many of the images were already in my mind. Yet, almost as a reflex my brain thought they were taken by a man. This way I discovered the story of a great woman, her vision, and her life. Her work almost doesn’t feel real. Her story, what she lived was a great inspiration.

Margaret Bourke-White explored every aspect of photography: from the first images dedicated to the world of industry and corporate projects to the great reportages for the most important newspapers such as Fortune and Life; from the visual chronicles of the Second World War and the Holocaust to the famous portraits of Stalin and Gandhi, from the South Africa of apartheid to the America of racial conflicts up to the thrill of aerial visions of the American continent.

The exhibition is part of “The Talents of Women”, a program promoted by the Department of Culture of the City of Milan dedicated to the universe of women. The objective is not only to produce new levels of awareness on the role of women in social life but also to concretely help to pursue the principle of equity and equal opportunities that, from our Constitution, must be able to transfer into everyday representations and cultures.

Born in New York on June 14, 1904, and grew up in a middle-class family. She enrolled at Columbia University attracted by the natural sciences, but soon, thanks to the course taught by Clarence White directs his attention towards photography.

Photography should not be a field of contention between men and women. As a woman it is perhaps more difficult to obtain people’s confidence and perhaps sometimes a certain form of jealousy plays a negative role; but when you reach a certain level of professionalism it is no longer a question of being a man or a woman.

In 1928 she decided to move to Ohio where she opened a photographic studio, specializing in architectural, design and industrial photography. In Cleveland she photographed the blast furnaces and started to be considered the first famous industrial photographer. In order to shoot, she climbed on the ledges of the tallest skyscrapers, flew over cities and went into the most dangerous areas of factories. In fact, her obstinacy and ambition did not stop her in front of the high temperatures of the castings, in her search for new photographic technical solutions, nor did they keep her away from long hours of work in unhealthy environments.

In 1930 she was the first Western photographer to go to the USSR, making reports on Soviet industry. In 1937, together with the successful writer Erskine Caldwell, she showed the faces on the tragic conditions of life in the American countryside devastated by drought, famine, and poverty. In the same years, for “Life” is sent to Europe: in Germany, Austria and Czechoslovakia to document the advance of Nazism and the impending war.

Back in the U.S. Margaret imposes her desire to become a war reporter on the front lines of the front. No woman had ever been accredited by the U.S. Army on the theaters of war, but the determination of the photographer together with the power of persuasion that could have a magazine like “Life”, the most widespread on U.S. territory, have the better. Margaret Bourke-White is accredited to the photographic pool of the army, she is drawn specifically for the war.

Surely Margaret Bourke-White in war gave the best of herself both as a woman and as a photographer. Her lens stops on battlefields, on moments of rest, field hospitals, bombings. She photographed North Africa, the slow ascent of Italy, which had become a secondary front after the Normandy landings; and above all, with her film, she stopped the tragic moments of the arrival of the Americans led by General Patton at Buchenwald. The images are historical documents of enormous value. In 1947 she is in Pakistan and India, where she interviews and photographs Ghandi only a few hours before he is killed. In 1950 she was in South Africa: she described apartheid and went two miles underground to portray the work of gold miners.

In 1963 she writes the autobiography “Portrait of Myself”. The last years she lives retired in her house in Connecticut, with the little money set aside spent on medical care due to Parkinson, where she died in 1971.

In 1964 he produced his first mail-order catalog, a one-page mimeographed sheet containing advice not to expect fast delivery during climbing season. In 2001, along with Craig Mathews, owner of West Yellowstone’s Blue Ribbon Flies, he started One Percent for the Planet, an alliance of businesses that contribute at least 1% of their net annual sales to groups on a list of researched and approved environmental organizations.

Fashionopolis: The Price of Fast Fashion and the Future of Clothes, by Dana Thomas, is the definitive book on the cost of fast fashion, and a blueprint for how we get to a more sustainable future. Today, one out of six people on earth work in fashion, churning out 100 billion garments a year. Yet 98 percent of them do not earn a living wage, and 2.1 billion tonnes of clothing is thrown away annually. The clothing industry’s exploitation of fellow humans and the environment has reached epic levels. What should we do?

Overdressed: The Shockingly High Cost of Cheap Fashion, by Elizabeth L. Cline. Cheap fashion has fundamentally changed the way most Americans dress. Retailers are pro­ducing clothes at enormous volumes in order to drive prices down and profits up, and they’ve turned clothing into a disposable good. But what are we doing with all these cheap clothes? And more important, what are they doing to us, our society, our environment, and our economic well-being? In Overdressed, Cline sets out to uncover the true nature of the cheap fashion juggernaut, tracing the rise of budget clothing chains, the death of middle-market and independent retail­ers, and the roots of our obsession with deals and steals. She travels to cheap-chic factories in China and looks at the impact of America’s drastic increase in imports.

Fashion industry 2030. Reshaping the future through sustainability and responsible innovation, by Francesca Romana Rinaldi, Matteo Ward, and Matteo Marzotto. The book explains in detail and with many examples the concept of responsible innovation by answering the following questions: How will the fashion industry be in 2030? What can the different stakeholders do in order to speed the responsible innovation? Which will be the role of traceability, circularity, cradle-to-cradle, collaborative consumption, B-corporations? How technologies can catalyze the change? How the consumers interested in sustainability can contribute to this change?

“Made in Italy? Il lato oscuro della moda”, by Giuseppe Iorio. I don’t know if you can find the book in English, anyway, the book is a courageous report of a thirty-year working experience in the world of fashion and textile industry. There is the story of Irina, who hand-selects feathers for jackets; that of Daria, forced to prostitute herself in order to eat. The “good guys”, the small loyal laboratories remaining in Italy, true representatives of the “made in Italv”, and the “bad guys”, including many fashion bigwigs who, with the complicity of unscrupulous entrepreneurs – Italian and foreign – relocate wildly destroying lives and the economy of our country and those in which they realize, at starvation costs, their productions. Nobody, after having read this essay, will be able to look at the great signatures with the same eyes.

Finally, “La rivoluzione comincia dal tuo armadio”, by Marina Spadafora. Also for this one, I don’t know if the English version is available. Luisa Ciuni and Marina Spadafora interweave their voices – of journalist and militant stylist – to narrate the advent of fast fashion and the consequences of low cost, the bulimia of consumption and the consequences of waste, the new slavery, the depletion of resources and the cruelty imposed on animals. Yet, techno-logical innovation is opening up ecological paths, circular economy models make it possible to combine profit and fairness, and among Millennials there is a marked sensitivity to green fashion. If it is true that the revolution starts in our closet, being able to discern between what is sustainable and what is not is the first essential step to ensure a future for our children and our planet.

In the past few months, some of my friends asked me how to be more sustainable. Obviously, the alternatives are endless and range from daily products to even car purchase. From a more practical point of view, when you wanna buy a piece of clothes, I think there are 8 simple actions you can put into place in order to have less impact on the environment without actually spending loads of money. Let’s see them:

1. Start thinking differently about the number of clothes you actually need! Limit yourself to buy less or fewer clothes of better quality;
2. When you do need to buy, consider shopping in second-hand stores;
3. Wash your clothes in cold water or less;
4. Instead of disposing of a garment: recover, reuse, repair, or recycle it;
5. If you have doubts about the brand you want to buy you can inform yourself through the “Good on You” app or consult the site online, which shows what you are doing in the direction of sustainability;
6. If you can afford to spend more money upfront, “vote with your wallet” – buy sustainable brands – or seek out “slow fashion” brands;
7. Responsible consumption or the sharing economy logic of swapping, secondhand, renting, or leasing are also gaining popularity, with an increasing number of brands providing this service. Mud Jeans, for example, operates a “Lease A Jean” model. For a small monthly subscription price, you can lease a pair of Mud Jeans. After a year (or whenever you feel like changing them) you can switch to a new pair of jeans, and your old ones will be recycled to make new wonderful items;
8. Last but not least always keep yourself informed constantly. Do not lose your curiosity, think critically, and ask yourself why something is good and something else maybe not, and look for answers.

You must realize that buying is a moral act, and not just an economic one, as it involves thousands of people sowing, harvesting, spinning, weaving, dyeing, cutting, sewing, and embroidery. You must ask brands for commitment, honesty, responsibility, and investment, and you must show empathy, respect, be ethic, and human again because no matter how attached we are to nature, our whole existence depends on it.

“How to be more sustainable when shopping?“, I’ve been asked this question by several persons and sometimes I find it difficult to answer. In this article, I don’t wanna list the old same sentences as “buy less”. I wanna give you sustainable shopping alternatives that were born thanks to technology.

I’m talking about mobile apps born for buying and selling, which are populated not only by us mere mortals, but also celebrities (as if they didn’t already have enough money).

• Vestiaire Collective has French origins, and therefore, a bit snobbish, because it only accepts big brand items. In fact, when you post an item for sale Vestiaire checks the images and the description that you give and accepts it only if it meets the demand of the market. In addition, before sending the object, this company has the task of intermediary by making strict quality checks before the product reaches the recipient.

• For those who don’t have a closet overflowing with Chanel, Prada, Hermès, Depop is the best solution, as it allows you to sell any item. You can create your own profile that becomes a real store and the whole world becomes a potential customer. Selling is easy and immediate: you describe the object, which can be new from the store or used, then you upload the pics and evaluate it according to the conditions. The methods of payment are among the most varied: through the app (which, however, holds a 10%), by bank transfer, credit card, through Paypal, in short, if you have the money you have everything.

• Rebelle: the digital vintage boutique. Rebelle, on the other hand, comes from northern Germany and, compared to Vestiaire Collective, has a focus on vintage luxury. Also in this case, Rebelle guarantees that the garment is authentic, takes care of shipping and protects payments. The process is similar, with a pass through the atelier to verify the quality of the garments. “We love items with a story,” reads their platform, which for now only sells women’s products (clothing, handbags, shoes, jewelry and accessories). The commission ranges from 17% to 40% of the sale price.

• Shpock: the store in your pocket. Shpock is an app born in Germany, its name not very easy to pronounce is the contraction of Shop in your Pocket (SHop in your POCKet), a store in your pocket. It’s not very different from Depop as a setting, it has less eye-catching graphics but covers a wider range of items. You can see clothes, accessories and shoes but also furniture, tech gadgets, cameras. It works throughout Europe, but the convenience is that the items are shown according to the geographical location of the buyer. Another important aspect: the service is completely free.

Obviously everything goes smoothly if you are honest and if you meet people as transparent, so it is always better to buy from those who already have many feedbacks or in any case be prepared to give information via private message, so as to confirm that you are a real person with serious intentions. Unfortunately the cons for this kind of shopping are many. Often I see in the home girls scammed with items that do not conform to the description or even never received.

Yet, in my opinion, you have to think positive! A bit like in life, if we get caught by the negative events then we should lock ourselves in the house and not go out anymore, then, for shopping addicted it will be difficult to give up certain opportunities that this application puts under the nose. Not only does these apps allow us to save money on big and small purchases, but it also gives us the opportunity to earn big bucks so we can finally buy those Dolce & Gabbana’s that we’ve been after for ages, or for those who have a baby maybe a new toy.

What is sustainability? Every day it is becoming more and more difficult to define it, due to the excessive misuse of the word. As the founder of Patagonia declares in his book ‘Let My People Go Surfing‘: “The word sustainable, as gourmet and adventure, is part of those words that have been misused so many times that they have lost any real meaning. Sometimes sustainable development can be everything, apart from sustainable.”

The UN World Commission on Environment and Development defines sustainability as: “Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. For sustainable development to be achieved, it is crucial to harmonize three core elements: economic growth, social inclusion, and environmental protection. […] To this end, there must be the promotion of sustainable, inclusive and equitable economic growth, creating greater opportunities for all, reducing inequalities, raising basic standards of living, fostering equitable social development and inclusion, and promoting integrated and sustainable management of natural resources and ecosystems.”

In the charter for the UCLA Sustainability Committee, it is likewise defined as: “The physical development and institutional operating practices that meet the needs of present users without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs, particularly with regard to use and waste of natural resources. Sustainable practices support ecological, human, and economic health and vitality. Sustainability presumes that resources are finite and should be used conservatively and wisely with a view to long-term priorities and consequences of the ways in which resources are used.” 

According to Maria Teresa Pisani, in the book Fashion Industry 2030, in the Garment and Footwear (GF) industry, sustainability takes into account the environmental, health, human rights and socio- economic impacts, and their continuous improvement through all stages of the product’s life cycle (design, raw material production, manufacturing, transport, storage, marketing and final sale, to use, reuse, repair, remake and recycling of parts and components).

In conclusion, sustainability implies responsible behaviors towards future generations to create an added value and to preserve the Earth and human rights.
