Salzburg is one of the most beautiful cities in Austria and an easy destination to explore in a single day. Located near the German border, it’s a popular day trip from Munich, Vienna, and other parts of Europe.

Even with limited time, Salzburg offers plenty to see and do.

I arrived in Salzburg early in the morning and immediately fell in love with the atmosphere. The city feels calm, elegant, and incredibly picturesque. Walking toward the historic center, I passed along the Salzach River with beautiful views of church towers and the surrounding Alps.

One of the best things about Salzburg is how walkable it is. Most of the major attractions are located close together, making it ideal for a relaxing day trip itinerary.

Salzburg’s Old Town is truly the heart of the city. The narrow cobblestone streets, colorful buildings, and hidden courtyards make every corner feel magical.

I spent hours wandering through Getreidegasse, Salzburg’s famous shopping street lined with traditional Austrian signs and boutiques. This area is also home to Mozart’s Birthplace, one of Salzburg’s most visited attractions.

The architecture throughout the Old Town is stunning, with grand churches, historic squares, and charming cafés around every corner.

One of the highlights of my Salzburg day trip was visiting Hohensalzburg Fortress, one of the largest medieval castles in Europe.

Perched high above the city, the fortress offers panoramic views of Salzburg and the surrounding mountains. The climb up is rewarding, though visitors can also take the funicular railway.

From the top, the views were absolutely unforgettable. Salzburg’s rooftops, rivers, and Alpine backdrop looked like something straight out of a fairytale.

No trip to Austria is complete without experiencing the local café culture. After exploring the city, I stopped at a traditional Salzburg café for coffee and dessert.

I also made sure to try Salzburger Nockerl, the city’s famous fluffy dessert. This traditional sweet soufflé is light, airy, and lightly dusted with powdered sugar, designed to resemble Salzburg’s surrounding mountain peaks. Fresh out of the oven and served warm (honestly not my favourite dessert).

Before leaving Salzburg, I took one final walk along the Salzach River as the sun began to set. The fortress illuminated above the city created the perfect ending to an unforgettable day.

The combination of historic architecture, mountain scenery, and peaceful riverside views makes Salzburg one of the most charming cities in Europe.

While you could easily spend several days exploring Salzburg, one day is enough to experience the city’s highlights. Its compact layout makes it easy to see major attractions without feeling rushed.

Lanzarote is not a destination you simply visit — it’s a place you feel. Shaped by fire and wind, this Canary Island invites you to slow down, breathe deeper, and reconnect with nature. We spent five unforgettable days here at the end of January and beginning of February, staying in a traditional finca surrounded by lava stone and vineyards.

Landing in Lanzarote immediately feels different. The landscape below is dark, textured, almost lunar, yet surprisingly alive. After picking up our rental car with AutoReisen at César Manrique–Lanzarote Airport, we drove through volcanic scenery to our finca, stopping only for groceries along the way. The first day was intentionally slow — no sightseeing, no schedule — just time to settle in and let the island’s energy sink in. Staying in a rural finca is one of the best ways to experience authentic Lanzarote, especially if you plan to explore the island by car.

Beaches, Local Markets and the Rhythm of the Island

Our first full day was about discovering Lanzarote at a gentle pace. On Sundays, the Teguise Market is one of the island’s highlights, filling the former capital with local crafts, food stalls, and live music. It’s one of the best places to experience Canarian culture and pick up handmade souvenirs. I personally bought from a local artist a little postcard, I highly recommend you to visit Sherezade Morales Art Gallery.

If the ocean calls instead, Playa Famara offers one of the most iconic coastal landscapes in Lanzarote. This long, wild beach is popular with surfers, but even without a board, walking along the shoreline beneath the towering cliffs is unforgettable.

Later in the day, we chose a calmer beach for swimming and sunbathing before heading toward the coast for dinner. Eating fresh food by the sea in Playa Blanca or Puerto del Carmen, with the sound of waves in the background, felt like the perfect introduction to island life.

César Manrique, Art and Nature in Perfect Balance

To truly understand Lanzarote, you need to understand César Manrique. His vision shaped the island’s architecture and preserved its natural beauty, and dedicating a day to his work adds depth to any Lanzarote itinerary.

In the north of the island, Jameos del Agua and Cueva de los Verdes offer two very different experiences inside the same volcanic tunnel system — one artistic and poetic, the other raw and mysterious. From there, we drove to Mirador del Río, one of the most scenic viewpoints in Lanzarote, overlooking the island of La Graciosa.

In the afternoon, visiting the César Manrique Foundation, built inside lava bubbles, felt intimate and inspiring. It’s a place that perfectly represents the harmony between humans and nature that defines Lanzarote.

Timanfaya National Park and Lanzarote’s Volcanic Soul

One of the most powerful experiences in any Lanzarote travel itinerary is visiting Timanfaya National Park, home to the famous Fire Mountains. This vast volcanic landscape was formed during dramatic eruptions in the 18th century and remains one of the most unique natural attractions in Europe.

Because private vehicles are not allowed inside the park, visitors explore the area through the official Volcano Route bus tour, which takes you deep into lava fields and craters while explaining the island’s geological history. The silence and scale of Timanfaya are humbling and unforgettable.

On the way back, the La Geria wine region revealed another side of Lanzarote’s volcanic landscape. Here, vines grow directly in volcanic ash, producing unique wines that reflect the island’s resilience. A wine tasting in La Geria is as much about the story as it is about the flavor. Two must try are Bodegas Rubicon and El Grifo, where you can taste white wine typical of Lanzarote.

La Graciosa Day Trip: Wild Beaches and Simple Living

One of the highlights of this 5-day Lanzarote itinerary was the day trip to La Graciosa Island. A short ferry ride from Órzola transports you to a car-free island where sandy roads and slow rhythms dominate. Renting bikes allowed us to explore at our own pace, reaching untouched beaches like Playa Francesa and Playa de las Conchas, where the Atlantic feels raw and powerful.

Lunch in Caleta de Sebo, the island’s small main village, was centered around fresh seafood and ocean views. Returning to Lanzarote in the late afternoon, we drove along the Famara cliffs viewpoint, watching the sun dip into the ocean — one of the most memorable sunsets of the trip.

Our final day was intentionally unstructured. Wandering through Puerto del Carmen Old Town or along Marina Rubicón in Playa Blanca is perfect for a relaxed morning and last-minute shopping. If time allows, Playa de Papagayo offers a beautiful setting for a final swim and sunset.

Leaving Lanzarote was not easy. The island’s volcanic landscapes, quiet villages, and deep connection between art and nature leave a lasting impression.
